Announcement and discussion of taikai (competitions) in the UK

Hizen Challenge

Postby PaulGray on Mon May 09, 2011 6:15 pm

Dear Kendoka,

Jeff Humm sensei has asked me to circulate information about a new taikai – The Hizen 18-30 Challenge – which we are hosting on the 11th June 2011.

We would be very grateful if you would forward this to any members of your club aged between 18-30.

The taikai is innovative, in that it includes a normal taikai, but also a preliminary ‘knock-out’ round with a number of practical exercises for participants designed to test their cutting speed, accuracy and stamina. These exercises can be seen in video on our site at http://www.hizen.info/challenge/five.html- and it is simple to practice them in your own dojo, replacing the fixed targets in the video with fellow kendoka holding shinai.

The taikai features generous prizes of funds to spend on kendo equipment – so if you have any hard up student members looking to buy a nice new bogu, this could be their chance! Also, if enough people are interested we will be able to arrange accommodation in the dojo overnight at a cost of only 20 euro – making a stay overnight in London more practical for those on limited funds. All entrants will also receive a ‘goodie’ bag of gifts and mementos.

It is not often someone launches a new event on to the UK kendo scene and we are aware that this is a little ‘different’ – as such, we very much hope you will support us and encourage your members to come along and give it a try.

Taikai registration closes on 30 May.

Many thanks,

Paul Gray

2012 Hizen Challenge

Following the successful launch last year, Hizen dojo is again running it's 'Challenge' taikai for Under 30's.

On the 29rd September we will be holding The Hizen Challenge. The Hizen Challenge is a new type of kendo competition. Open to men and women aged between 18 and 30. The Challenge is a trial of speed, strength and endurance designed to test the skills of Europe’s best young kendoka. It will take real effort, real grit, to win the €250 first prize.

Right the times getting closer. Just so we've got a better idea of the numbers on the day, can I ask anyone who'd like to take part to send an email to info+challenge@hizenfoundation.org Name Age and Dojo should be all the info we need.

Thank you and have a nice day.
