Don’t forget to come to intensive training! An invite from the Kendo Squad Manager

Reminder Intensive training this weekend.
It will be held at JFS, The Mall, Kenton, Middlesex HA3 9TE website: www.jfs.brent.sch.uk

Saturday : Sports Hall  from 12.00 till 17.00

Sunday : Dance Studio from 09.00 till 13.00

Please remember that attendance is open to all BKA members and it is important part for selection for the GB squad. But, more importantly, for your own kendo improvement and development.

Here are some comments from Intensive training in January, from 3 different groups, a novice, junior and a more experience kendoka (new to squad).

Novice

“As a complete novice my alarm bells should of rang when it was said to me that I have ” jumped into the deep end ”

“My time spent on the intensive training course, was a mixture of exhaustion, confusion and sweat, a lot of sweat, from a novice point of view, it requires a great deal of mental focus –  it was after all an intensive training course, I picked up and learnt a great deal about the sport but mostly I learnt a lot about myself, I felt completely out of my league but because I met a great bunch of lads and ladies all of which were more than willing to take time and show me the how and when of the exercises I actually enjoyed it, I learnt to dig deep, watch and listen.  This was the first time I have fully worn all the bogu.

“Besides my glasses constantly steaming up, I didn’t want to stop I really had a great time and these two days have whizzed by.

Please accept my gratitude when I say thank you for your instruction and for making me feel very welcome.”

Junior

“During the practice on the weekend, from the moment i stepped into the dojo and the moment i left it, it goes without saying that there is a strong bond between the kendoka. Weather you were a kyu grade or a dan, 15 or 50, the challenges lay ahead were always possible, and you could feel yourself being pushed to your targets, instead of the targets of the dojo. Personally i found the practice to be very enthusiastic and helpful in my kendo, and you feel proud of what you have achieved in this short weekend. Despite the aftermath of the odd ache and stretch, you go away from it wanting to do it again, along with the support and friendships that you make with your fellow kendoka.”

Experience kendoka (new to squad)

“My first experience of the Intensive Kendo Training Sessions was at the JFS School in Kenton, North West London on the weekend of the 16th and 17th January this year.

“The training session consisted of a hard structured practice with brief intervals where the technical aspects of what we were practicing would be explained.  I was particularly impressed with Mano Sensei’s in depth explanations of each technique and definitely came home with a better understanding of them.

The second day focused more on Shiai-geiko and was a good opportunity to put into practice the advice given on the previous day.  Overall I thought that the event was very well organised and was a good combination of disciplined practice and a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.”

I hope to see many of you there,

Regards,

Sean Starr
Squad Manager
