Jodo Grading Questions for Darlington Seminar 2009

Please answer the following questions as required for your grade. You may use illustrations to emphasise your point. Please however try to restrict your response to no more than four sides of A4.

Shodan and Nidan

These questions should be answerable from the Seitei Jodo Manual or from asking one’s Sempai/Sensei:

  1. Name the posture where the feet are together and the jo held by the side of the body.
  2. Explain how the starting position is taken for the Shijo in the kata “Monomi”.
  3. Name all the Tandoku dosa in Seitei Jodo.
  4. What is the approximate overlap of sword and jo in the awase position?
  5. What is meant by the word “Kamae”

Sandan and Yondan

These questions should be answerable from research from the Seitei Jodo Manual, one’s own sensei and other external sources such as books, the internet, other senior teachers.

  1. Make a detailed sketch of the jo and the bokuto showing dimensions and the names of the parts. Also name what the jo should be made from.
  2. Name 4 of the kamae taken by the Uchidachi in Seitei Jodo.
  3. Describe the body and jo movement for Gyakute zuki.
  4. Explain how the the Uchidachi should respond to the first strike by the Shijo in Tachi Otoshi giving details of foot and sword position and timing.
  5. Name three principal students of Shimizu Takaji Sensei.
